Everything references Pollock here. The title, the action painting, the fact that you know you're referencing Pollock etc, but here's why I like your paintings (and bare in mind I'm an arts professional, readers):

I've seen thousands of students, sunday painters, so-called professionals try to emulate the genius (yes, he WAS a genius) of Pollock, but most often they just f**k it up, making poor imitations that don't consider the colours properly, only happen in the centre of the canvas for fear of getting paint on the rug etc, and don't look great on closer inspection. It's easy to do what seems simple very badly. That is what most imitators do.

However, your paintings DO look good up close. They are not rushed, they have balanced compositions with no good AND bad bits, they cover the whole canvas (you clearly put some sheeting down and everything) - and most importantly you actually create a great sense of depth with your application. This is harder than 99.5% of people would think.

I also DON'T think you set out to emulate Pollock. I know you admire him, and I know you enjoyed the Ed Harris film - no, I think you see an enjoyable, expressive form of painting that you genuinely want to try, have tried, and keep doing.

I'm not saying this cuz you're my friend, I'm saying it because I don't like to think some smart-arse would come on here and diss your painting for all the wrong reasons.

Bravo, Mr. Hickman. Bravo...
